Health, Sustainability & Economic Impact of Nature-Based Exercise : 2024 White Paper

MAVERICKS Life Co. is proud to announce the release of our 2024 White Paper: Nature-Based Exercise & Fitness. The White Paper is based on the latest available research in green exercise and sustainable solutions to improve health-related fitness, using the UK as a Case Study in measuring health & economic impacts.

Health, Sustainability & Economic Impact of Nature-Based Exercise : 2024 White Paper

This white paper explores the economic and health impact of the inclusion nature-based activities as a promising sustainable health promotion strategy. Recent studies in sports science, health, and environmental research reveal promising benefits of nature-based approaches. Training and learning in a natural environment offers whole-body, physical and mental health benefits, improved physical skill, and resilience. Even better, these activities feature hobbies that involve people recreationally and socially.

Health & Environmental Sustainability

Outdoor sports and recreation have been valued  for centuries across cultures worldwide. However, sports and exercise science has traditionally focused on indoor facilities and structured fitness regimes, often overlooking the diversity of individuals who participate at all levels, as well as the outcomes of training in natural environments. It has also traditionally focused on commercial industry growth for the active population, neglecting the needs and barriers of those who need it the most -- inactive communities.

Additionally, our industry relies heavily on built infrastructure and practices that are becoming increasingly unsustainable, both economically and materially. The 2015 Paris Agreement highlighted the urgent need for sustainable solutions to address the global environmental crisis, and with the publishing of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and updates in international policies, there has been a renewed wave of interest in nature-based research and sustainable approaches, including within the realm of sports and fitness.

How can Nature-Based Exercise Help?

Nature-Based Exercise (NBE) addresses  outdoor active leisure as a key contributor to community health and fitness. With the prospect of turning outdoor hobbies into calories spent, we can motivate more people to be:

  • More physically active

  • Engaged with nature

  • Socially connected

  • Engaged in environmental improvement

This 2024 white paper addresses the role of nature-based physical activity in contributing to health and economic impact, using the most recent evidence using the United Kingdom as a national case study.
